That night, I lay in bed thinking about how I’d heard Edward’s unmistakeable voice growling at me to stop being so stupid just before I’d fallen off the motorbike.

I must really be desperate, to hallucinate like that, to recreate his voice inside my head. So pathetic, so stupid. I could not get comfortable with the bandage around my head, and I writhed around in the scratchy sheets for what seemed like hours.

When I finally slept, my mind decided to torture me with a different dream than usual. I was not alone in a desolate forest but in this very room…and oh, my God, Edward was there, striding in with angry eyes, yanking me out of bed with a grip so fierce it hurt. “What are you doing, endangering your life like that?” he demanded. “You promised me to look after yourself…not to do anything reckless…and you just broke that promise for the second time! I can’t let you keep doing this!”

Amidst my fear and bewilderment and pure joy at seeing Edward’s heartbreakingly beautiful, perfect face, there came a sudden rush of anger. “What are you going to do…break up with me?” I said to dream-Edward, with a hysterical edge to my voice. “Let’s see…no! Been there, done that, got the t-shirt!”

“Nothing changes the fact that you broke your promise,” Edward said, ignoring my reproaches. “I need some way to make sure you don’t do that again. Didn't you think about Charlie? About your Mom? You are the most exasperating....”

Breaking off his tirade, he glanced around the room. Without letting go of my arm, he pulled the heavy wooden chair away from my desk, sat down on it, and with one motion, pulled me over his lap. “You can’t be serious,” I cried, humiliated to no end that he was going to see just how much he still had the power to make me blush, stammer, tremble.

Firmly, decisively, he slid down my pajama bottoms, so that I was helpless and vulnerable and bare to his eyes. It was the first time he’d ever seen that part of me naked, and I was as pale as winter snow. To add insult to injury, he tipped me a little forward over his strong thighs, no doubt to put the curve of my ass in a better position for his hand. I knew what was coming, but I still flinched and gasped when his hand smacked down on my sensitive skin…he was being incredibly careful, as he was strong enough to break me in half, but the spanks were hard enough, thank you, and they stung. He spanked every inch of my ass…when I reached back to try and cover myself, he grabbed my hand, pinned it in the small of my back, and spanked some more, until my bottom and thighs were pink and tingly and I was wiggling hard to try to get away from his relentless hand.

“Crazy…reckless…stupid stunt…a motorbike!...what were you thinking…idiot!...no regard for your safety…magnet for trouble...” Every phrase was punctuated by a stinging spank.

My pride, of course, stung too, except for the part of me that was treacherously glad to be touched by him in any way at all, to hear his voice again, even when dark with irritation and with something I couldn't quite name. My mind was in turmoil as the spanks rained down, wishing the earth would swallow me up, and wishing it would never, never stop. Let this be real, I thought, oh God, let this be real.

I remember him ending with four hard spanks and a lecture on keeping myself safe----and when I woke up he was gone, as was the redness and the sting.

Before my feet hit the bedroom floor that morning I was, of course, already planning my next move.
